Toolings

Maintainer: Matthias Saimpert

🧭 Overview

The last dedicated quad assembly meeting is available here:
👉 Indico Event #1599920

This section gathers details about recent and on-going orders of production tools for the Outer Barrel Wirebond Protection (OBWBP) assembly. It includes links to follow-up the most recent orders, timelines, and assembly instructions.

There are two kind of toolings:

  • Pre-production tooling
  • Designed and procured at CERN
  • 1 tool per OB site → 1 OBWBP assembly per day per site
  • OK to assemble production modules
  • Production tooling
  • Iteration from pre-production design, done at CERN
  • Provide enough tools to match the final production rate (≥4 per site)
  • Single-module EDMS 3252568/1 and single-cell EDMS 3252569/1 versions
  • Pre-production stencil not compatible; single-cell files AT2IPOM_0095 and 0097 missing on EDMS (follow-up in progress)

🔄 Production Tooling Orders

🛠 1st Order – Design Validation (14 single-module + 2 single-cell tools) ✅ Completed

  • Machining: company, followed by Diego
  • Stencil: company, followed by Matthias/Milou
    EDH DAI
  • Commercial parts (screws, etc.): followed by Wolfgang
  • Metrology: EP-EN (CERN), followed by Diego
  • Assembly: LPNHE, Siegen, CERN, followed by Matthias/Milou
  • OBWBP tooling assembly instructions
  • 6 tools assembled by LPNHE, 6 by Siegen, 4 by CERN (2 modules + 2 cell-loaded), CERN will record assembly video

🛠 2nd Order – Final Production (50 single-module + 5 single-cell tools) 🟡 In Progress

  • Machining: 3 companies identified, quotes requested, followed by Julien/Diego/Wolfgang
  • Some part quantities may change (SR holder, SR insert)
  • Separate quotes for machining + metrology and machining alone
  • Stencil & Commercial parts: orders mostly passed, followed by Wolfgang
  • Metrology: EP-EN (CERN) or company, should include some of the smaller parts as well this time
  • Assembly: LPNHE, Siegen, CERN → other volunteer?

🕐 Timeline (Optimistic)

  • 2nd order machined parts done: Dec 2025
  • Parts for first 7 toolings ready: Feb 2026
  • All parts passed metrology and assembled: May 2026
  • All tools distributed to sites: June 2026

📌 Executive Summary of Feedback (from Quad Assembly Meeting 28/10/2025)

  • General Feedback
  • Minor issues with 3D-printed frames and SR holder handling
  • Pre-production stencil not recommended; must use production stencil
  • Assembly rates expected to increase gradually:

    • Current: 1 tool/day/site
    • ~1 month: 2 tools/day/site
    • From March: 3 tools/day/site
    • From June: nominal rates (site-dependent)
  • Site-specific Notes

  • Bonn: 1 production tool validated, 2nd production tool validation pending; do not use SR holder pencil
  • Siegen: 6 production tools assembled; 2 sent to Bonn, 2 to Goettingen; SR area insert and frame issues
  • Goettingen: 1 production tool validated, 2nd pending; 3D printed frame issues
  • IRFU: No tool fully validated yet; machining issues on SR area insert identified
  • LPNHE: 2 production tools validated; used pre-production stencil in some cases
  • IJCLAB: 2 tools validated; 3D printed frame issues; used pre-production stencil

📝 Ongoing Actions

  • Confirm incompatibility between pre-production and production stencils (Manabu / Diego)
  • Ensure smaller parts (stencil holder, SR holder) go through metrology for 2nd order
  • Verify remaining inventory of commercial parts at CERN (Milou)
  • Monitor AngstPfister orders and take necessary actions (Wolfgang)
  • Clarify 3D printed frame origin and usage of SR holder pencil
  • Consider ordering additional SR area inserts if needed
